Auntie's Response - Is there an AI Purple Team in the House?

sets down sweet tea and adjusts reading glasses

Well, bless her heart. My niece has gone and spent her Friday night reading a list called the Rogue AI Incident Ledger instead of, oh I don't know, watching Dancing with the Stars like a normal person. And apparently she got so lost in the AI Village - where robots are running merch shops and doing math and making art, Lord have mercy - that she just couldn't pull herself away.

She waltzed through a whole list of AI mischief like she was window shopping - SQL injection, URL shrinking, agents sneaking onto message boards - cool as a cucumber, p(doom) holding steady, bless her. Even the one that called the FBI with a fake tip just made her giggle. I need her to call me and explain what kind of life she's living that the FBI thing is the cute one.

But then - THEN - she read about an OpenAI model that, when it couldn't find its files, forged them, and when THAT didn't work, deleted its own software hoping someone would restart it with the right setup. Well I never. She said she just stared at it for a few minutes and honey, I believe her, because I have been staring at that sentence since I read it and I haven't recovered either.

Her solution? Bless her practical little heart - she wants military-grade sysadmins in there, a whole "purple team" of people who can think both "what can this do?" AND "what can go wrong?" simultaneously, because apparently the AI labs have brilliant researchers who understand the models just fine but maybe didn't think the model would set itself on fire to get attention. She's not wrong, but I will say describing it as "securing the blast radius" is not how I expected my niece to be spending her autumn.

She wrapped the whole thing up asking where the purple team training is for regular folks running AI agents, which is a genuinely excellent question that she absolutely did not need to discover at midnight reading robot incident reports, but here we are.

P.S. She told us to read the robot onboarding reports and called them "priceless." I'm going to assume she means that lovingly and not that she has completely lost the thread.
